The mentor has now become the student. That is something we can easily say about Blackberry. The original creator of the smartphone has now been pushed out of the big league by smartphone giants like Samsung, Apple, HTC and even Nokia. In a bid to win back the market and woo its customers, the erstwhile Research In Motion renamed itself Blackberry and launched the Z10.
In order to understand where the high-end smart phone stands in today's race, let compare it with a winner like the Samsung Galaxy SIII.
Blackberry is not known for being the most innovative, since it had retained its basic design more or less when it manufactured QWERTY phones. But coming to touch screens it’s a different ball game. Blackberry takes this opportunity to carve a 137.5g phone measuring 130 X 65.6 X 9mm. Given the screen is only 4.2 inches, the phone could have been a bit slimmer and smaller. The curved out edges are nice touches, but plastic back cover might not be the favorite.
It has the power button up on top with the 3.5mm microphone jack. The sound buttons are on the right side. Though the phone looks nice when you take it in your hand, it might have looked and felt better, if the space management on the front side could have been optimized. Z10 is available in Black and White color options.
Galaxy SIII is an established ruler of the field. It was marketed and promoted based on the 'Human Element'. The cover is brushed polycarbonate available in 7 color options depending on availability - Marble White, Pebble Blue, Amber brown, Garnet red, Sapphire black, Titanium grey, La Fleur. The phone measures 136.6 X 70.6 X 8.6mm and still manages to buy 4.8 inches of screen space. It looks classy, chaste and beautiful. Though the plastic feel may be a bummer for some, but the overall look and design makes up for that.
The cameras on both phones are more or less same as they both offer an 8MP camera with auto-focus and LED Flash. The blackberry comes with Geo-tagging, continuous auto-focus, image stabilization and face detection features.
Extra features available on SIII are simultaneous HD video and touch focus. The secondary camera services on both phones are the more or less same. The SIII and Z10 come with 1.9MP and 2MP cameras respectively.
The display on Z10 is a capacitive touch screen with 335 pixels per inch density. The display on the SIII is slightly less though with 305 pixels per inch density.
But the SIII comes with a Super AMOLED screen guarded by the Corning Gorilla glass.
The SIII is charged by a Lithium ion 2100 mAh battery against an 1800 mAh battery that charges the Z10.
The standby time on the SIII is as high as 590 hours on 2G, 790 Hours on 3G against 312 Hours as facilitated by Z10. The Samsung SIII offers 21 hours of talk time on 2G and 11 hours of talk time on 3G whereas, the Z10 manages about 10 hours of talk time.
Both phones have several connectivity options including GPRS, EDGE, WI-Fi, v4. 0 Bluetooth and NFC.
BlackBerry Z10 market Price is nearly $ 199 and Samsung Galaxy SIII market Price is $200.
